Sweet and Savory Steel Cut Oats

We’re on vacation with a bunch of extended family this week – thirty-one people in one (huge) house in Breckenridge, CO! We’re all taking turns preparing meals, and my husband and I were on for this morning’s breakfast. Our “Savory and Sweet Steel Cut Oats” were a hit and so simple, I thought I’d share it in case you’re needing some inspiration for delicious, nutritious breakfast ideas that work well for big groups.

Last night, I put the oats, water, and 2 T salted butter in a Crock Pot (which I found in a cupboard in our rental house—score!) and let them cook on low all night.

For the Sweet Oats:
I set out bowls of brown sugar, raisins, walnuts and shredded coconut and let people fix their own bowls.

For the Savory Oats:
My husband sautéed garlic, onions, mushrooms and broccoli on the stove in a large deep pan, then added cooked oats and parmesan cheese, mixed it up and let it cook up a bit more.

That’s it! Simple and delicious and great for a big group of people!

How about you? What are some of your go-to meals for big groups?

VIDEO: Dinner Party Recipe Review—Beef Roast with Dark Rum Sauce in the Crock Pot

I love to throw dinner parties! But putting together a meal for a group of guests has become much more challenging since we became parents of three. My power weapon for entertaining (and pretty much every other night of the week)?

My Crock Pot!

Last night I made a dinner for my husband and his twin brother’s birthday. I tried out a new recipe from a slow cooker cookbook my mom gave me for Christmas, and here is my review of it—plus a little tip to make this recipe a truly amazing, melt-in-your-mouth affair.

The book I mentioned is “Crock Pot the Original Slow Cooker Skinny Slow Cooker Recipes” and you can buy it here: http://goo.gl/MOKvL4

The recipe I tried is “Beef Roast with Dark Rum Sauce” on page 70.
